It sure seems fitting that you're the first official challenger, Stormy! Well let's make this a bit of a wild one. I'm sure you're well acquainted with the paths up to the top of Mt Chimney, so there's no need to tell you how to get up here. Just make some smoke when you get to the top and I'll come grab you. I enclosed a blue flare in case you need it. See you soon!

Zac walked out across the lava. He stood on a wide battle platform of volcanic stone that was thick enough for the high-energy fight he was expecting. Heatran had sunk back under the lava and he occasionally saw her head poke up above the molten rock flow, eyes and crest visible for a few moments at a time before she submerged herself again. "Now this is a proper battlefield!" Zac called, his voice lost in the rumble and bubble of the caldera. Marowak edged along the shores of the lava pool, and Volcarona floated above on the thermal winds. She looked right at home in the roaring heat of a volcano.
Zac kept one eye out for the column of blue flare smoke.

BIOME BADGE: ROLLING MECHANICS

You have 2 ACTIONS per post: Damage, Status, Buff, Dodge, Heal, and Switch Out.

You do not need to roll to Dodge, Buff, or Switch Out.

When a Pokémon has been successfully Damaged by an attack 3 TIMES, they will be UNABLE TO CONTINUE. Switching a Pokemon out does not reset this total.

The trek up the side of Mt. Chimney was spent double and triple-checking her GPS. At some point, it becomes apparent that the destination is the plateau tucked away not too far away. She hadn't been lost.. yet.. but she had been properly confused. That, and she was already running a bit behind given her severe lack of direction. [break][break]

But if she was being completely honest, it was the journey up Mt. Chimney that had rattled her to her core. The last time she had been here she had been in hot pursuit of the legendary bird, Moltres. She had put her faith in a ranger well-versed in the ritual surrounding the bird and its relationship with the volcano. It had resulted in her completing the sacrifice to summon Moltres with her own life.[break][break]

Of course, she was fine. It had granted her immunity to fire, given her the ability to fly. It had given her a boost of confidence and purpose that she hadn't known she'd needed.[break][break]

Seeing the volcano now, however, still gave her a wash of goosebumps. It takes her away from the blue flare in her hand that had been given to her in the chance she got lost. However, her sudden flush of anxiety turns manifests in a burst of flame between her fingertips. It sets the flare off in her hands and she squeals, surprised by the involuntary sparking effect.[break][break]

"Oh, shit!"[break][break]

She fumbles the object, hands still aglow with nervously-sparking orange flames.[break][break]

Zac saw the thick stream of blue smoke rising over the crater edge. "That'll be her! Guess I was a bit too hard to find down here" he said, reaching for Steelix. He sent out the massive snake and climbed on, commanding Kev up the inside of the crater and over the lip. At the top of the rise Zac caught sight of Stormy. She was fumbling with the flare, the orange sparks and blue smoke almost consuming the woman.
"Hey Stormy!" Zac called out from on top of Steelix as the monster ground down the mountainside. "How's it going? Hope the trip didn't give you much trouble." He extended a hand, offering an easy way up onto the back of Kev.
Once the pair were ready, Steelix headed back up the mountain and down into the crater, where the arena waited.
Marowak was standing in the middle of the lava arena. He banged his bone against the floor in bursts of energy and dark sparks. "Well looks like I don't need to pick today," Zac said with a laugh.
He sent out a third Pokemon, which landed among the rocky sideline with a dull clunk. It was circular, and blended in with the surroundings. "You don't mind if I record this right?" Zac asked, attaching a camera to the little Minior. "I'd love to put the footage up on the Gym website, but if you'd prefer I can just keep it for myself. Best way to learn from your mistakes, right?" He asked with a wink.
Out in the arena, Marowak let out a grumble of annoyance. He was getting restless. "Yeah yeah, keep ya skull on," Zac said. "Well you heard him Stormy. Fire when ready."

Upon hearing both Zac's booming voice as well as the rumbling of the Steelix descending the side of the mountain--was that the Steelix the entire time?-- Stormy fumbles the flare even worse. It remains aflame as it clatters against the ground, fizzing and popping and smoking. Sheepish, Stormy makes a half-lidded attempt to hide the fact that her hands are still aflame, tucking them behind her back.[break][break]

But when he offers his hand for her to take in order to hitch a ride on his Steelix, she pulls hers back out. With a brief and powerful puff of air from her chest, she winks the remaining wick of flame from her palm to fit her hand in his.[break][break]

"No trouble at all, my friend!"[break][break]

The climb is spent with her tucked against his back to hold on, hands balled into fists for fear she might still be too warm for comfort. [break][break]

"Ohhh! An Alolan Marowak! I have one of those, they're quite the confident little dancers, aren't they?"[break][break]

She glances up, now noticing the Minior along with Zac's request to record. The woman smiles, offering a shrug and a wave of her hand.[break][break]

"By all means, please do!"[break][break]

The repetitive tapping of the Marowak's flaming bone draws her attention back again. She laughs immediately after Zac's comment: 'fire when ready'.[break][break]

"Fire when ready-- that's funny."[break][break]

And then she tosses one of her own pokeballs, revealing her Magcargo. The Pokemon immediately begins to slowly, very slowly, make her way to the center of the battlefield. The reason? There is a particularly juicy pile of molten waste bubbling through the surface as a result of more unstable ground in the center. [break][break]

"Let's open the arena up a little bit, yeah? It's feeling a little bit cramped."[break][break]

Need no further encouragement, the Magcargo begins to pull the earth apart with an EARTH POWER. It bends and breaks to her will, rumbling with effort as it makes the ground unstable and highly volatile. She doesn't stop there, however. The moment the ground softens up and lava seeps through, she begins to fling hot stones with an outburst of ANCIENT POWER. [break][break]

And then the Magcargo sinks into the magma as if she is right at home among the bubbling crimson liquid.[break][break]

The Ancient Power soared towards Marowak and broke across the arena that Zac had set up. A hail of tectonic force that pelted the platform and knocked Zac's Pokemon around. He got clipped by a larger stone and tumbled across the stone.
"Right off the bat Stormy is making fantastic use of the battlefield, using the lava as cover and turning the very stone of our caldera conflict against Marowak!" Zac boomed, narrating the battle for the recording. He adds more detail in the description, as there are a number of viewers that just listen to his voice for the ASMR. "Unsurprisingly, her skill with this domain has already landed her the first hit!"
Meanwhile, Marowak got to his feet, propped up by his bone club. The Ancient Power hit damn hard, but there was fire burning in, on, and around the little Pokemon and he wasn't about to be taken out in a single hit. Marowak looked around for his enemy, but Magcargo had disappeared under the lava. There was no sign of them in the gloopy, shifting redness. Marowak banged their long bone against one of the scattered rocks in frustration.
"Marowak's having a rough time without a visual on his opponent," Zac said, sagely "As a mainly physical attacker, lacking something to hit can be very de-motivating."
The bone Pokemon drew back their weapon and hurled it, spinning, into the lava! The bone churned at the viscous liquid, cutting through and under it as it looped around the arena, hoping to his Magcargo as the blind attack passed through the goop again and again.

Zac narrates the battle as an announcer would, and the effort he puts in brings a smile to her face. It hadn't entirely slipped her mind that he would be recording this, but it was far different from her past experiences in gym battles.[break][break]

It is true, of course, what he says about her skills with the terrain. Though she has to admit that most of her perceived strength is as a result of Magcargo's skill, not necessarily her own. She just happened to be capable of taking advantage of strong Pokemon's intuition and capabilities.[break][break]

The previous upheaval of hot rocks covered in molten lava is a success, flattening the Marowak before it could escape. Magcargo has sunk into the lava itself, allowing the magma to seep over her skin. She, as a result, is too preoccupied with getting comfortable to worry about the Marowak's recoil.[break][break]

Consider Stormy and Magcargo both surprised when the Marowak's bonemerang does a sweep through the lava. The first time, it just kicks up hot spray, finding nothing. But the second time it seems to have a homing system, slamming Magcargo from behind. The Pokemon moans in surprise, shaking hot rocks and magma from her shell as she breaches the surface.[break][break]

Except this time, she combines her ANCIENT POWER with a LAVA PLUME. The molten liquid pouring off of her shell explodes outward amongst the upheaval of more rock and rubble. Where it lands, it sizzles, burning holes in the ground.[break][break]

The second Bonemerang hit and came spinning back towards Marowak. He caught it, waving the flaming stick in celebration and and spraying droplets of hot magma across the arena. "A miss, a hit, and a fantastic catch!" Zac shouted, excited.
The sizzling globs that Marowak shook off his bone were nothing compared to Magcargo's retaliation. The volcano shuddered, and the fire slug launched a great jet of magma and semi-solid rock at Marowak. Using his bone for leverage, Marowak heaved up a flat chunk of rock from Magcargo's previous attack and used it to deflect the spray of flaming sediment.
"In survival situations, finding shelter should always be your priority when faced with rain," Zac said, "I haven't had to deal with many instances of 800 °C rain, but the advice seems to be pretty universal."
The splatter of sizzlign liquid was broken by heavy thuds as chunks of ancient basalt palted the arena. A particularly jagged piece fell from above and shattered Marowak's improvised shelter, carving deep black scratches into his skull helmet. He staggered for a moment, dazed yet unhurt, before focusing on the semi-submerged slug.
"Oh he's not gonna like that!" Zac said, as his Minior swooped in for a better shot. "Marowak are very protective of their skulls, and there's no faster way to enrage them than to damage such a prized posession."
Marowak's skull shuddered, and the edges grew sharper, darker. Another chunk of basalt fell directly on him but this time the stone exploded into a cloud of dust, and Marowak emerged, unscathed and furious. He stumbled to the edge of the arena and crouched down, his skull humming and groaning as if filled with ghostly energies.
The shadows around Marowak's skull grew long, and he let out a feral scream as he launched himself skull-first out over the magma and straight at Magcargo!

It is, of course, at that time, the time being Zac suggesting that one find shelter from the rain, especially, 800 degree rain, that Stormy remembers her clothing isn't fire-proof. In hindsight, it would have been more ideal and, in fact, the correct decision to wear her patented FERNANDO SILPH-designed fire-resistant clothing.[break][break]

Though to be fair, magma was a different situation from regular fire.[break][break]

Regardless, she hadn't, and a hole is literally burning in her shirt for a good moment before she realizes and brushes it aside sheepishly. [break][break]

And when she looks up, it appears that neither of Magcargo's attacks have been effective. The rocks crumble when they smash against his skull helmet. It seems to leave a mark, and Stormy sucks in a sharp breath at the realization that comes with it.[break][break]
Her own Marowak's had a serious issue with having their skull's scratched or damaged, so she could only assume the same from Zac's.[break][break]

However, in the Pokemon's reckless charge forward, it appears that he misreads the sheer depth of the magma and becomes slowed down by it enough that Magcargo meanders casually out of his way. Her efforts to move through the super-heated sludge, however, prompt another EARTH POWER that may or may not prove to be even more of a concern now that the Marowak was knee-deep in lava alongside her.[break][break]

It is commonly accepted wisdom not to hurl yourself into any body of liquid of unknown depth. This piece of advice goes double for pools of magma of unknown depth. But Marowak was furious at having its skull scratched, and jumped in anyway. Zac covered his mouth with one hand, watching the unfortunate attack, which Magcargo dodged with ease.
What proceeded next was a rather embarrassing chase through the viscous pool, with Marowak moving slower than the literal snail. "Come on mate, maybe get back on dry land ay?" Zac said. His Minior floating above, capturing the hilariously slow chase in HD.
Marowak ignored Zac's advice, and walked right into the Earth Power. Chunks of heavy basalt exploded up out of the magma, sending Marowak flying. The Pokemon was tossed out of the pool, landing on the shore of the caldera in a crunch of rocks.
Marowak went to wade back into the magma and Zac pulled out a Pokeball. "Okay, you need to calm down. This isn't going to get us anywhere, and it sure isn't making for good tv."
Zac returned Marowak, and gave a sharp whistle. A winged form dislodged from its spot in the upper reaches of the crater, and soared down into the arena. Volcarona had been waiting in the wings, watching, and she was ready to disrupt this stagnant fight. She flew over the pool of lava, soaring on the scorching winds, and Zac felt a stir in the air. He grinned.
"And in comes the replacement!" he shouted, as the six-winged moth circled the semi-submerged Magcargo. The wind picked up, battering Zac and spraying his Golden Explorer's Jacket with sizzling embers as Volcarona spun in tight circles. She pulled at the air around her, forming a twister that dragged at the magma below.
"Oh boy! Now that's a burning ring of fire!" Zac shouted, watching the tornado form. The pillar of wind swelled, turning orange as it sucked up the magma. The pool of molten rock was moving now, dragging at Magcargo as Volcarona tried to draw the snail up into the body of the tornado!

Chunks of heavy, molten rock smash against the craggy surface. They split open and bubble, liquid frothing at the seams as a result of too much heat expanding inside. And where the rocks lay, so does the Marowak- at least for a moment.[break][break]
The little creature is resilient, however, getting back on his feet to rinse and repeat. It appears to be an inevitable win for Stormy's side up until Zac swaps the angry little fella out for his second Pokemon.[break][break]

Down from somewhere unnoticed, the Volcarona flies into view with an intense gust of wind. The hurricane it conjures up is stronger than even Magcargo can withstand, and the slug holds her ground to the best of her ability, although it appears she is being pushed backward.[break][break]

"Alright, lady, you can take a quick break! We'll let Centiskorch take it from here."[break][break]

It felt too risky to heal now that a stronger, uninjured Pokemon would be their opponent. Magcargo is quickly returned in favor of an incredibly long and slippery centipede. The Centiskorch lashes out immediately upon entry, his long body igniting with flame as he hopes to FIRE LASH the Volcarona.[break][break]

Should he miss, his body would slap into the lava and spray it everywhere.[break][break]

With Magcargo's gooey body being pulled into the hurricane, Stormy did the smart thing and switched out.
Zac nodded in approval. "It's important to know when the battle isn't going your way," he said to the camera. "Some matchups can get one sided, and knowing when to switch is just as important as knowing when to push the attack."
Zac pointed out to the massive tornado of rock and magma that was pulling at the arena. "That's just not a good place to be for a Pokemon with low mobility." Stormy knew all of this, of course, but the viewers at home and on the website didn't. Great battles were filled with dozens of little, teachable moments.
Stormy sent out her Centiskorch, which lashed at Volcarona with it's whip-like body. The attack missed, hitting dead air as Volcarona flew higher, still keeping firm control over the swollen hurricane. Centiskorch slapped down into the lava, spraying it everywhere. Most of the goo was pulled straight into the vortex, and Volcarona flew slowly towards her new opponent, bearing down on Centiskorch with the massive magma maelstrom.

There is a snap, followed by a clumsy flail, as the Centiskorch's body falls back into the magma. The following hurricane that rips at the terrain proves impossible for him to evade, but he recovers quickly despite the circumstances.[break][break]

He uses the heat from the magma to help contain his own spent energy, curling into a tight FLAME WHEEL that sends him hurtling for the Volcarona. Embers spit from the length of his body, burning hotter as he focuses on keeping himself contained and agile. [break][break]

Should he connect, his body would release and his head would attempt to strike out a second time in a CRUNCH. This second attempt would be carried out even in the event that the flame wheel did not meet its mark.[break][break]

The one-two of Centiskorch's Flame Wheel/Crunch combo collided with Volcarona, and the moth screeched in pain. The initial hit had left a clear tire-track scorch mark up Volcarona's front, and the follow-up bite had dug deep into the insect's thorax.
Zac let out a low hiss in sympathy. "Some fantastic aerial whip-crackin' there Stormy!" he said, as the centipede fell back towards the churning lava. But Volcarona was not going to let Centiskorch escape.
With a high pitched buzz the wounded moth swooped on her attacker, blasting him with the thrumming, living sound of a thousand furious broods. Volcarona was wounded and desperate, and there was a high, frantic note amidst the crawling thrum that assaulted Centiskorch. The end was fast approaching, and she was going to stand victorious.

The Centiskorch writhes as it falls out of the sky, back into the lava. It lands with a splash that sizzles, but doesn't appear to harm the bug-type in any way. [break][break]

Unfortunately, even despite the bug-typing and the resistances associated with it, not even he is immune to the Volcarona's bug buzz. The strength of it manages to disperse the lava just a bit for some reason.[break][break]

Regardless, it isn't enough to stop the Centiskorch from coming back for another round of attacks. It snaps its body again in another aggressive FIRE LASH. [break][break]
